Five weeks at Lake Shasta then another five weeks traveling cross country. I'm happily done for the year.
Our very first day on the second trip we broke down in Death Valley of all places! We were pulling the fifth wheel. We were stranded there for 4 hours in that heat waiting for Onstar to find a large tow truck that could tow both vehicles at the same time. When he got there it took another 1 1/2 hrs just to hook up correctly. Then we had to drive 100 miles to Pahrump, AZ. Don sat in the front with the driver. I had a choice of sitting on a dirty mattress or a tool box. I chose the tool box. That was a long bumpy ride. When we reached Pahrump it was night time so the driver dropped us off in the parking lot of the Chevy dealer & that is where we spent the night with no A/C. Over 100 degrees.
Then we went on to Phoenix, New Mexico & Texas visiting relatives. It was a big heat wave the whole trip. 104 - 109 the whole time! Those states are full of Locusts that chirp all night long. It sounded like there were millions of them in the trees.
We also did some research on my husband's family tree. We had heard stories that his grandfather was the "Marshall" of a town called "Marshall" in Arkansas around the turn of the century. We were staying in Missouri & made a day trip to Arkansas. We couldn't find any records that specifically stated that but we did go by the old jail & take photos since we were there & maybe later something will turn up.
Then next door to the old jail was a very old house. Of course I imagined Don's grandpa living in this house & walking next door to the jail to work. We heard a very interesting story about this house from a local.
He said not too long ago there was another old (but not as old) home on this lot. It became old & in bad need of repair so it was torn down. "Inside that house was this even older house!" That is why this house is still in pretty good shape. This used to be an old stage stop between Springfield, Mo & Arkansas & is supposed to be the oldest building in Searcy County.
I went out on my own excursions while my husband was doing things with his brother. Lots of antique stores around.
