My Movie Debut with Robert Redford : ) - Hah!
In the early 1970's my mom & I were in downtown Oakland, CA to clothes shop. We were walking down Telegraph Ave near the beautiful old Fox Theater. The Fox was built in 1929 & is now a historical landmark.
A crowd of people were walking into the theater & talking about Robert Redford. We got to talking & they said Robert was filming the Candidate inside the theater. They were going in as "extras". Mom & I walked in as well & signed up. This was way better than shopping. The shots were about Robert being on the theater stage giving a speech to the crowd as a presidential candidate. Mom & I took a seat close to the stage. Then the director said he needed some middle aged people to sit up on the stage behind Robert while he stood at the podium. Mom raised her hand & went on stage. There was a row of chairs on stage for about a dozen people. Mom sat second chair from the end in front of me. A few minutes later Mr. Redford himself walked in from back stage. He took the seat on the end right next to mom & started talking to her. I was down in the audience DYING! He was one of our favs in those days & SO CUTE. Then he got up & went to the podium for them to film part of his speech. Later they passed out box lunches to all of us (extras). After lunch mom & I split for whatever reason I don't remember. We grabbed a poster on the way out & it hung in mom's garage "forever". SIGH ...
When the movie finally came out we couldn't see either one of us but oh, what fun that was.
